“It’s the same either way.”
I heard this from my favorite makeup and fashion YouTuber, who also happens to be a philosopher and poet. A rare combo, and exactly why her channel is my go-to cozy corner when I need comfort.
She said the day will happen whether you get dressed for it or not. So why not dress for it with a bit of intentionality, whether that means comfort clothes or your dressiest outfit?
Since January last year, I’ve been trying this. Dressing up in the morning to mark the day. To say: I am here. This moment matters. And it has uplifted the quality of my work-from-home lifestyle.
As July begins, I’m craving that same gentle intentionality in more of my life.
Because June was too much!
There was travel for my best friend’s wedding in the midst of war in the Middle East, not being able to contact my family in Iran, and a constant worry about my brother’s wellbeing. How he’s going to process his near miss experience, the loss of so many of his friends, and the ongoing threat of the war starting again.
All of that, while still going through the motions of everyday life.
This month,
I need nourishment.
I need to let delight interrupt my plans.
I need to let beauty interrupt the urgency.
We live in a system that creates urgency, even in how we move through difficult emotions. And the spiritual world often ranks emotions, pushing the idea that we should always aim to be in a high vibe. That messaging has, at times, felt like gaslighting ourselves into positivity and making our human experience wrong.
Now luckily I know enough about how nervous system works. Instead of pushing to get to the other side, and telling myself, “Now get over it, he’s alive, you are okay,” and trying to feel all good and positive, I’m sitting with where it hurts, practicing how to increase my capacity to let little joys in.
This visual comes to my mind when I think about a resilient nervous system.
My SOS practices to process big emotions are Internal Family Systems (these are my go to prompts) and RAIN by Tara Brach.
I also keep remembering this poem by Rumi these days:
"This body is a guesthouse each morning someone new arrives.
Welcome them all for they may be messengers from the invisible.
Do not feel burdened by them or they may go back to non-existence.
Each time a thought enters your heart treat it as an honored guest, your worth is shown by the thoughts you entertain.
Embrace sorrowful thoughts for they sweep the house of your heart clean, scatter the withered leaves, and pull out the twisted roots, preparing the ground for the new shoots of joy.
What sorrow takes away from the heart it replaces with something better.
Without the fury of thunder and lightning the plants will be scorched by the sun.
Be grateful for all you receive, good and bad alike, for it may be a gift from the treasury of Spirit that will bring the fulfillment of your most secret desire."
I thought about creating a daily practice for myself to remember my intentions, I wrote it down and I thought why not turn it into a meditation to share it with you. If you desire more intentionality this month, have a listen and it might be exactly what you need:
And if you want to go deeper and explore your body’s story, take this quiz to see what patterns show up for you!
The way we hold ourselves matters. Not just because of how it looks. But because it shapes how we live, how we relate, and what we’re capable of imagining. Let your body speak. Let it interrupt the collective war and offer you a new way of being entirely.
